Music Magazine Genre: Initial Thoughts,Ideas and Research

I have been researching different magazine covers online and had been choosing my favourites so that I can look at it whilst creating my magazine later on. Below I will post pictures of these magazines:
This is the front cover of a Q magazine. Straight away as you can see that it breaks the rules of a normal layout of a magazine as the lead singer of Muse is using his guitar to crash the logo. Whilst breaking the rules it is a good way to link it in with the target audience as the target audience for this certain magazine is teenage boys (mostly) whilst some girls will read this. Boys reading this will be interested in music and might even own a guitar which will make them have something in common with the artist straight away.
The colour scheme for this magazine is usually black, white and red. These certain colours fit in with the genre of Rock/Indie/Alternative as the people who read these magazines and listen to that sort of music. Since the colour black is the most recognized colour of this genre it is the main colour throughout this magazine and appears on each page. For my own personal magazine I am going to use the same colour scheme and maybe include some more colours related to this genre, also on my models for my photographs I will dress them in black to reflect on the genre of my magazine.
As there are blocks of text on this magazine which tells the audience that they can kind things out about celebrities if they buy this and read inside. This is a good way to attract people to actually buy your magazine and I think I might use this idea and place it on the front of my front cover.
This NME magazine front cover breaks the rules of a normal magazine, and this is one of the main reasons why I have chosen this as one of my favourites. The colour scheme which is usually is involved with this sort of magazine is black and white which will link in with it's general buyers. As it is colourful it is very eye catching which will make people want to buy it because it is different than what they are used to.
The way in which the font is not in standard block text and rather scribbled around the picture of Jimi Hendrix is why I like this magazine more than any other magazine I have seen in shops. It appears that the font has beeen signed rather than typed out on a computer. Also the way in which the model for this magazine is dressed is also breaking the rules as the outfit is brightly coloured, creative and not linked in with genre at all. Whilst it is breaking the rules it is a good way to link it in with the fonts used and the colours of those fonts.
Out of the three magazines I have chosen to spoke about this is my favourite out of them for many reasons. The main reason for this is the picture used for the front cover, which is an extreme close up of Florence (from Florence and The Machine.) The way that this used catches the viewers eyes as soon as they look at the shop for a magazine or browsing online through magazine covers. This is an advantage to NME as more people would look at this magazine and then probably buy it.
In addition to this; as the front cover is simple, plain and average it instantly breaks the rules as usually on an NME magazine is it busy and bold. Even though the layout is quite low key the use of bold writing and blocked writing evens it out which is very easy to read for the viewers and also very eye catching as most of the text is in capital letters.
Usually a Rock/Indie/Alternative magazine has a picture on the front cover of a band which has just been signed or a famous band, on this front cover obviously this is different as there is only one person on the front. Even though Florence is in a band it is still dividing itself from the rest and that is another reason why I like this front cover.
This is one of NME's content page on their magazine. I have chosen this to place on my blog because I think that because it is so basic and blocked it works well with the image of the magazine and fits in with the genre very well. Once again the colour scheme is black, white and red (but that time it includes yellow.) Anyone familiar with this type of music will know that them colours are the same colours which represent Leeds festival every year.
A simple touch such as just using arrows to direct readers to the page number works will with this content page because it becomes more inviting to read and also it enables them to browse throughout the whole contents page quickly to find that arrow with the page numbers on. As this is a well thought out content page, when I am creating my own music magazine I might take this in thought and maybe use it myself, but in a different way away from NME magazine.
Even though this magazine is not related to the genre my music magazine for media will be based on, I think that this front cover of Billboard is very interesting and unique. The most imporant reason why I really like this front cover is because of the way Rihanna's picture is covering up the title of the magazine but then behind the rest of the font. It adds a sense of cheekiness and a fun like element towards the magazine whilst breaking the rules of normal magazines based on this genre.
In contrast to the black/reds/whites which have been used on many other of the magazines which I choose to use, the colours used on this front cover are very bright and 'in your face' which will catch the publics eye a lot more than the basic colours which are linked with rock etc. Even though in my magazine (on the front cover and throughout) I am going to use the usual connotations of rock, I am thinking of adding just snippets of these colours just to add some uniqueness to it.
This is a two page spread of a magazine which I think works very well for the image of the magazine. Lily Allen has been photographed and placed one half of the page which instantly breaks the rules as it is taking up room on the page rather than it being filled with text. The way in which Lily Alen is styled I think personally well thought out. She has been placed with heavy layers of eye-liner on her eyes to go with the 'rock 'n' roll' image and also the black and red checkered shirt works well also.
The main title for this page is set out like seperate letters which have been placed together to make it. This is very effective and eye catching to the public and would stand out from any other page in the magazine. I think that this is a wise choice, and a good one also. Included in this page the main title has been made into a quote, on my magazine hopefully I will interview somebody and place a quote on there somewhere (probably on the main two pages so it would look more official.)
Once again the house style for these two pages are the same throughout. I will have to follow these colours when creating my magazine so it looks like a proper professional magazine for that specific genre. The colours will include; black, red, white and yellow.

Even though that this is not a magazine cover, or anything to do with a magazine I am going to use it as part of my research because I am going to use the design, colour scheme and outfits and link it in with my photographs for my magazine. As 'The Veronicas' are a famous girl rock band it lets me see just what they wear for photoshoots and imnages which might go onto their album etc.
The big hair and the bold colours in the bold colours on their outfits is what makes this picture so good and makes it stand out from the rest of the pictures I looked at online. It just shows that if you use black make-up (eye-liner, mascara etc) it will work for this genre. Also the contrast of the black hair with the other girls blonde/silver hair makes it seem like they are totally different people but are brought together by wearing nearly the same outfits and having their make-up done the same. If I use girls rather than boys for my cover shot I will definatley take this picture and try and use some of their ideas.

Finally
I will use the ideas from these front covers and place them into my magazine when I create it. I will follow the same colour scheme as most NME, Q and Kerrang magazines which is; black, red and white. Also, as these magazines above only have one person on the front to break the rules, I will be using a band with an average number of four people on it but take styling ideas from the magazines which I have researched on.
